What Happens to the Soul After You Die?

There's been a lot of talk recently about near-death experiences and the afterlife. Perhaps the most prominent case was the doctor whose near-death experience landed him on the cover of Newsweek, but there are many others in scientific and medical fields who feel that death and the afterlife can't be properly explained. So what happens to our soul after we perish from this Earth? A new video and article on the Huffington Post offers some opinions from scientific professionals. For example, this guy:

Bruce Greyson, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, challenged Koch’s view of consciousness. He said that, “if you take these near death experiences at face value, then they suggest that the mind or the consciousness seems to function without the physical body.”

My girlfriend has already informed me that she owns my soul even after I die. I guess the "til death do us part" thing wasn't cutting it for her. I'm sure she'll take good care of it, for a while at least. Eventually she'll get sick of seeing it in the living room, and she'll want to redecorate, and my soul will end up in a garbage bag headed toward Goodwill. And then sooner or later some college kids will buy my soul for 2 bucks to use as part of a Halloween costume. It's not really the eternal journey I desire, but that's what happens when you give up ownership rights for your soul. It's the same thing that happened to Paul McCartney when Michael Jackson bought all the rights to all those Beatles songs. You can say you want the best for my soul, but we all know that sooner or later you'll lease it to a Target commercial.

Update: My girlfriend read this. Her reply was, "I wouldn't throw out your soul. I'd just put it in a box in the attic."
