If you listen to all the teacher-bashing and talk of at-risk youth, you’d think that half our students were dropping out to live in dumpsters or join kickball leagues. But as it turns out, the U.S. high school graduation rate is on pace to hit 90% within the next 7 years. That would be an all-time high. YOLO, bitches. From the Huffington Post:
The gains in graduation rates have been driven largely by minority students in large, Southern states: Between 2006 and 2010, African-American students saw a 6.9 percent increase in graduation rates, and Hispanic students had a 10.4 percent increase.
The article doesn’t address why the improvement with minority students has occurred, so I'm just going to stick with my theory that it’s all because of Kanye West. Laugh if you want, but Kanye is the greatest civil rights leader of this generation. He came around at a time when gun-toting FUBU-wearing thugs were the prime role models for young African-Americans, and he changed the culture so that high fashion, intelligence and self respect became something to admire. Meanwhile, white people have been watching Kim Kardashian and getting dumber by the minute. It's ironic that Kanye and Kim ended up having a baby, because no two celebrities have done more to improve and retard our culture (respectively) over the past 5 years. That kid is either going to become president or reveal himself as Satan incarnate. I'm not sure which will happen but either way the Westboro Baptist Church is going to be pissed.
