The Carnival cruise ship that was “crippled” after an engine room fire has finally docked after 5 days at sea. Passengers went from disgruntled to cheerful as the ship pulled into its destination at Mobile, Alabama. CNN describes the unpleasant conditions on the cruise:
The power outages put many toilets out of order. Some commodes overflowed, splashing the floors with waste as the ship listed and sending urine and feces sloshing across floors and down hallways, passengers reported.
"It runs down the walls from one floor to the next. It's running out of somebody's bathroom out into the hallway all the way across," passenger Larry Poret said.
Other passengers reported long lines waiting for food, water shortages and widespread boredom. Many passengers took to sleeping in hallways or even outside to escape the odors and heat below decks.
I’m sure this will come off as insensitive but is what these passengers “suffered” through really such a big deal? For two days I saw headlines about “Disaster on the High Seas” and “The Cruise From Hell,” and I assumed the boat had sprung a leak. Or that pirates had taken over the vessel. Or that it had turned into a Hunger Games-style murderfest. Then I finally see the full story and it turns out the boat smelled funny and people had to eat less. I’m sure it wasn’t fun, but let’s stop treating this like the Titanic. And citing “widespread boredom” as part of the disaster? That one’s on you. Sure, the Foreigner cover band and Tuesday evening Pai Gow game may have been canceled, but you’re still on a boat in the middle of the Caribbean. Play some shuffleboard, get a tan, get drunk, relax. I realize it’s crowded and smells like urine, but isn’t that the same as being at any public pool? Now, all of that said, I don’t know why people still go on cruises. Seems like 1 in 10 cruises ends up with a major problem and a bunch of pissed off customers. Even the Bataan Death March had a higher customer satisfaction rating.
