The note you see above was left by a restaurant customer in lieu of a tip, then posted to Reddit, where it quickly became a viral sensation. The Proposition 30 he refers to is a recent ballot measure in California that raised taxes on people making over $250,000. So in other words, the customer is rich and the only reason "it has to be this way" is because the guy's a passive-aggressive dickhead. If you're really trying to cut back on discretionary spending, the first thing you would do is stop eating out. The truth is this guy invested way too much of his life into politics, his team lost, and he's taking it like a little bitch. Either that, or he's some cheap dude who figured out a genius way to avoid paying tips. I generally don't advise screwing over the people who serve your food, but I guess if you're a morally-bankrupt, strapped-for-cash nomad who never eats at the same place twice, this is a pretty good plan. You only have to screw two broke twenty-something waiters out of tips and the business cards pay for themselves!
[By the way, has anyone else noticed that people in the restaurant industry are always trying to raise the number on what is considered a good tip? 15% was the standard for a long time, then at some point it became 20%, now I see people pushing for 25% or more. When you see a story like this, you can always tell which commenters are servers. Everyone else is like “what a jerk!” and the waiters are like, “this is inappropriate, I always tip 47% for good service!”]
