Hurricane Sandy caused massive destruction in Connecticut. The damage could take weeks to clean up and it could be even longer until people get their lives back together. There is one consolation, however: we are much better off than people in New York City. Not only did NYC suffer massive devastation and flooding, but now, rats are coming to take over the city. From the Huffington Post:
"Rats are incredibly good swimmers," said Ostfeld. "And they can climb."
In other words, Sandy is unlikely to knock off the resilient rodents, but rather displace them.
"One of things we know can exacerbate disease is massive dispersal," he added. "Rats are highly social individuals and live in a fairly stable social structure. If this storm disturbs that, rats could start infesting areas they never did before."
The rats that used to inhabit the subway are now running amuck above ground. And New York City rats aren’t like normal rats. They’re basically slimy disease-ridden cats with sharp teeth. Bottom line, you’re better off living in the ghettos of India than in New York City right now. At least in India, when you contract the bubonic plague, you get to eat some delicious curry first.
