The Candy Lady, a store in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is trying to capitalize on the success of the AMC show “Breaking Bad” by selling blue “meth candy.” The candy is modeled after the blue meth sold by Walter White on the show, which for those who don’t know is also set in New Mexico. In fact, The Candy Lady supplied this candy to “Breaking Bad” to use in their early seasons. Now they want to offer it to all their customers. Needless to say, some people are not thrilled. From Gawker.com:
But not everybody's happy with the idea of selling candy named after a highly addictive and dangerous drug. To those people, Hall responds, "Everyone needs to remember this is television. We're just playing on a television show. I don't condone drugs in any way, shape or form."
I can’t tell if this is the greatest or worst idea I’ve ever heard. On the one hand, “Breaking Bad” is the best show on TV, this candy is hilarious, and eating blue meth will make you look cool to everyone around you. But on the other hand… well… OK, I guess it’s the greatest idea ever. It reminds me of when I was a kid and every store sold candy cigarettes. They were fun, we thought we were being cool when we “smoked” them, and no one ever transitioned on to real cigarettes. Well, some kids did, but it wasn’t because of the candy, it was because of their terrible home life. This meth candy is the same. Listen, kids are going to learn how to get diabetes by sucking down drug-inspired candy products one way or another. I’d rather have them using in a controlled environment like The Candy Lady than doing it out there on the streets.
