This week, four Milwaukee police officers find themselves facing felony charges due their on-the-job conduct. Most of the charges involve your basic police brutality, choking out suspects and whatnot. Then there’s this guy…
[Officer Michael] Vagnini faces 25 counts over allegations that he repeatedly broke the law by rectally probing suspects after traffic stops, at times without using protective gloves, while searching for drugs. Wisconsin state law mandates that only trained medical personnel can perform body cavity searches on criminal suspects. Vagnini also allegedly forced suspects to strip naked after their arrest without authorization.
I understand why some cops want to harass or beat up suspects. They enjoy the power trip. I don’t condone it, but I understand. But why the hell would anyone perform a rectal probe without putting on gloves? There’s nothing in it for the cop. In fact I would argue it is far worse for the cop than the victim. I’ve never had a rectal probe but I’m pretty sure it’s painful whether the officer is wearing gloves or not. From the cop’s stand-point, though, there’s no benefit to going latex-free. The only thing you’ve accomplished is getting shit all over your hands. Christ, even Toby Keith knew enough to wear a boot when he was doing his rectal probing. Use your head, man!
