The class of 1973 from St. Martinville High School in Louisiana is holding a (29 year?) reunion party this year. The party has been the source of much controversy after organizers circulated an invitation claiming the party would be “whites only.” Their excuse: segregated reunions are the way they’ve always done it. Hey, I didn’t say it was a good excuse. KATC in Lafayette, Louisiana explains:
The Class of 1973 has always held a separate reunion. They would hold on for the white students and one for the black students. This year they wanted to change it up and have everyone celebrate together.
Liza Chance is one of the organizers for this year’s event. When the group met up to start the planning, they had already planned to have them separate again. That's when they decided to make a change. The problem occurred when, somehow, the previous plans were sent prematurely. Someone posted the letter online where it said that the "white graduates only" would be attending an after party event.
These guys are idiots. If they didn't want black people at the party, all they needed to say was "celebrate like its 1973 in Louisiana." You think any black people would show up to that party? It's one thing to be racist but you can at least do it with some tact.
