The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has published a new study that claims that, by the year 2050, America could be powered using 80% green energy. You can read more details at this link, but here are some of the finer points of this study:
NREL’s findings seem to completely obliterate the tired arguments that renewable power is too impractical, or that intermittent sources — those being sources like wind and solar that don’t generate power all the time — aren’t reliable enough for large-scale power production.
Interestingly, the report also looks at a mixed range of renewable energy sources as opposed to a single area of investment. Though wind power will make up the bulk of renewable power generation, biomass, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric have a place along with fossil and nuclear power. NREL also posits that while some of the largest areas of power generation will be localized, like East Coast offshore windfarms, the entire country can contribute.
The 80% green energy part of this story sounds great, but why do all of our government projects take so long to implement? Japan would have this project finished in 8 months. For some reason it takes America 38 years. I can't tell whether America is being run by stoners or procrastinating college students, but it's obviously one of the two. By the time 2050 rolls around, we probably won't even care about green energy any more. We'll be on to something better, like chartreuse energy. America needs to stop procrastinating and focus on chartreuse energy initiatives now!
