Sometime in the past year, one in five Americans has been short on money for food. I can totally relate. The other weekend, I was down in Manhattan, and I spent all my cash on rum ‘n cokes at Arctica, then I accidentally dropped my ATM card into a sewer when I drunkenly stumbled over a trash bag, so I had no money to buy a McDonald’s double cheeseburger for the train ride home. Oh wait, they’re talking about actual meals? That sucks, bro.
At the other end of the age range, many people who can't afford enough food have kids, and that's reflected in the classroom. Three out of five public school teachers say they see kids coming to school hungry, and many teachers report buying food for their students. The hunger situation may get worse in coming months, with food prices expected to rise due to the drought.
One trick for the hungry is to go to fast food restaurants and try to get some free day-old items before they are thrown out. Or, if you want to get day-old items from Subway, go up the counter and order a regular sub.
