One of the things that has truly defined my life as an adult and mother - besides stuff like becoming a more responsible person and experiencing the love a parent has for their child - has been my newfound (and secret...until now) love for top 40 pop and hip hop music.
I don't know WHAT happened but if you put me in a car alone I will seach frantically through the commericial radio stations until I find some Bruno Mars or whoever and I put it on real loud and I sing sometimes. Guys, I sing to it! This is the girl who at freshman year parties at BU would casually mention that Pavement was her favorite band and await lively conversation with fellow alt-rock fans.
I guess that behavior is sort of asinine in its own right, but still. I'm not sure what's up with the current trend. I still love the bands I once did but I guess I'm often in the mood for something immediately energetic and this stuff delivers.
I've found that one of the best ways to listen to this kind of music is to put it my running mix on my iPod (and then, um, play the running mix in my car too, like, all the time), changing the music every now and then so I don't get bored. For awhile now I've been dying to download Carly Rae Jepsen's song "Call Me Maybe" but have been holding off. Maybe it's shame or maybe it's me trying to pretend I'm still that Pavement-obsessed 19-year-old, but whatever the case, it's summer, it's hot, runs are getting more difficult and I think it's time I rewarded myself with that song.
And I think it's time you rewarded yourself with Cookie Monster's version.
