There are just a few more performances of Lucky Me at the Off Broadway Theater (down the path behind Toad’s Place on York Street). Sachi Parker performes a one-woman show describing what it’s like to have been the daughter of Shirley MacLaine. The show is a coming-of-age story with a famous figure lurking in the background.
Parker’s collaborator on both the book and script was Frederick Stroppel. The show, which has a full set, costume changes, sound effects and a gentle lighting design, is directed by Douglas Moser.
Joanna Keylock , who went to Southern Connecticut State University and co-founded the Naked Theatre, which was an important troupe around New Haven in the 1990s, is producing Lucky Me. “Sachi and Fred and I have all been friends for a long time. When I casually said to Sachi ‘I should produce this,’ she said ‘Sure!’”
Keylock’s other key production credit is the “Sips & Giggles” series she does at Lyric Stage in Westville, which pairs one-act plays with fine wines.
Keylock explains that the timing just seemed right to do Lucky Me now, and she liked the idea of having a traditional New Haven try-out before attempting to take the show into New York.
Parker “wrote the play first,” Keylock says. “Then people told her ‘It should be a book.’ A lot of the stories are the same.” One difference: “On the page, it can sound a lot harsher than it’s meant.” Parker’s sought a tone which isn’t vituperative about her travails. “It’s a beautiful show to watch,” Keylock says. “Simple. Stark but not empty.”
Describing her life from babyhood to married Connecticut-based motherhood, Sachi Parker “plays a lot of different characters,” Keylock explains. Not just herself at various ages but some of the many famous, non-famous and infamous people she came into contact with in her life and in her own acting career. A dead-on impression of her mom is foremost among them.
Lucky Me plays at the Off Broadway Theatre at Yale through June 9. Performances are at 8 p.,m. (203) 305-7762.
