Connecticut activists are planning to rally outside federal offices in Hartford Thursday at noon to protest the deportation hearing against Josemaria Islas, an undocumented immigrant who was arrested for a crime he never committed.
Islas was on his lunch break when he picked up by Hamden police who were looking for two Latinos suspected of trying to steal a bike.
He was acquitted, but judicial authorities turned him over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), apparently because of a loophole in state policy designed to prevent deportation of undocumented immigrants who haven't committed any serious crimes.
Thursday's protest rally will be happening outside the Abraham Ribicoff Federal Building at 450 Main Street in Hartford, where Islas' deportation hearing will be happening.
The rally is being organized by the Unidad Latina en Accione and other groups and organizations seeking immigration reform.
