Some University of Connecticut folks are all whipped up over their chances to be picked as one of PETA's "Most Vegan-Friendly Colleges" this year.
"There are vegan meals galore at UConn, including vegan ravioli caprese, vegan chicken pot pie, sweet-and-sour tempeh, and vegan tortellini della pangrattato," according to a UConn release on the the contest.
(Um, vegan chicken pot pie sounds a little odd. But whatever.)
UConn officials admit that the competition will be even tougher this year, what will the boom in vegan college food across the country.
The food-service outfit Bon Appetit estimates that, in the seven year's that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has been running its competition, the number of self-identified vegetarian college kids has gone up by 50 percent and the number of vegans has more than doubled.
Last year, UConn didn't make it onto PETA's Top Ten List for large schools.
The University of California - Santa Cruz came in first in 2011; the University of Florida was second; and the University of California - Irvine was third.
Hmmmm. The top three were all sunny state schools. Could have something to do with vegans loving their rays.
UConn may also have another problem. It started out as a state agricultural school (and they weren't just raising veggies), and was even labeled a "cow college" years ago.
But that was ages ago. So maybe UConn does have a shot of scoring big with PETA. The voting began on Oct. 8 and selections depend on number of votes received, vegan foods offered, a schools enthusiasm in promoting vegan dishes, and student feedback.
Hope that "vegan chicken pot pie" doesn't screw things up.
