Arts & Ideas Announces Two Community Festivals Happening Before the Main One
You’d think that by now the International Festival of Arts & Ideas would’ve announced everything they’ve got planned. The fest kicks off less than five weeks from now. But surprises continue to surface. A&I, which under its longest serving director Mary Lou Aleskie has redefined its “international” title to mean not just acts from other countries but diverse ethnic groups existing here in New Haven, has helped organize two “pop-up festivals celebrating our community.” That sense of celebration is right there in the sub-fests’ names: Celebrate Our Dixwell (June 1 from noon to 6 p.m. outside the Dixwell Q House and Stetson Library) and Celebrate Our Fair Haven (June 8 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Christopher Columbus Academy on Blatchley Street in Fair Haven). The two “Celebrate Our…” events were devised in conjunction with groups from the communities being celebrated, as well as the Yale School of Architecture, which designed an “iconic traveling structure” which will be seen at both events and end up at the main festival of Arts & Ideas June 15-29.
