Curse the Son - Klonopian (April 12, 2012) |
So last year I made a list of what I thought some of the best releases from CT bands were for ths website at the behest of my bosses (because I think these end of the year lists are a dime a dozen). One of my fears was that I'd forgot one or more albums that probably should be included. Yup. I did. I present to you Klonopian by Curse the Son.
Lurching forth from the swamps of Hamden, CT is Curse the Son. They describe their sound on their Facebook page as "The Sound of dinosaurs walking the Earth." Yeah that about sums it up. Then again that can about sum up every stoner/doom/sludge metal band in the world but these guys really do deliver the goods, so to speak. Brutally heavy, face-melting riffs abound. The vocals shift back and forth from pained cries to mournful lamenting and combined with an exceptionally tight rhythm section truly gives this band the sound of immense beasts plodding across the earth, leaving destruction and havoc in their wake.
The band also lists their influences and the obvious bands show up - Black Sabbath, Witchfinder General, Trouble, Sleep, Electric Wizard, etc. They are what they are, which is to say that they play the type of doom/sludge/stoner mix you would expect if you took these above influences and blended them altogether. But unlike some bands who just try to mimic their idols, Curse the Son are able to carve out their own sound. Klonopian is highly recommended for fans of any of the bands listed here and an exceptional addition to the pantheon of Connecticut music. I've heard rumors of a new album in the works. I hope these rumors are true and hope to see a lot more from this band in the future.
