Plaid-wearing, whisky-loving , bearded musician Scott Hutchison, the frontman for Scottish indie rock geniuses Frightened Rabbit , makes me swoon like no other. His lyrics are a simultaneous punch to the gut and commiserating hug that anyone who's had any kind of difficult, real-world adult relationship, or emotional wherewithal to live sensitively can relate to. On Tuesday Feb. 5, the band will release its fourth studio effort Pedestrian Verse , following the release last year of the State Hospital EP (which made our end of year album list , naturally). The album is currently up for streaming over at the Guardian, and we very much recommend you give it a listen.

Late last year, I scrambled to put together a list of my favorite songs released during 2012, not just to have a handy playlist of songs I love, but to remind myself that I should keep track of this stuff starting at the beginning of 2013. Today, I added the first song to that playlist, which may very well turn out to be my favorite song of the year (unless 2013 has some seriously good music waiting for me). It's Ra Ra Riot 's "Beta Love," the title track off the band's latest release, out today on Barsuk Records .
